In a significant step toward creating a fully inclusive worship environment, the National Transformation Directorate of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) recently partnered with the Deaf Resource Centre to host a transformative 12-week sign language training program.
The initiative successfully equipped 14 church members with foundational Nigerian Sign Language (NSL) skills, fostering a bridge of communication between the hearing and Deaf communities within the church.
A Comprehensive Approach to Sign Language and Deaf Culture
The intensive 12-week curriculum went beyond basic gestures, offering participants a deep dive into the cultural and linguistic foundations of the Deaf community. Led by four Deaf facilitators, the program provided an authentic learning experience centered on immersion and mutual respect.
Key focus areas of the training included:
- Deaf Culture & Linguistic Rights: Understanding the identity, community values, and human rights of Deaf individuals.
- Nigerian Deaf History: Exploring the origins and development of the Deaf community and sign language in Nigeria.
- Foundations of Sign Language: Mastering the sign language alphabet, different types of signing, and foundational grammar.
- Christian Vocabularies: Learning specialized signs for ministry, prayer, and worship to facilitate active participation in church services.

Driving Social and Spiritual Transformation
The core vision behind this partnership is double-fold: to seamlessly integrate Deaf members into every aspect of church life and to encourage moral and spiritual growth that fosters positive social behavior within the broader community. By breaking down communication barriers, the church creates a space where Deaf individuals can engage fully in fellowship, leadership, and spiritual development.
Looking Ahead
Following the success of this inaugural session, enthusiasm across the congregation continues to grow. Plans are already underway for the next cohort, with details to be announced shortly. Furthermore, the Deaf Resource Centre hopes to expand this initiative to collaborate with other faith-based organizations and communities in the future.
This milestone was made possible through the visionary leadership and support of the Senior Pastor of TREM, Rev. Maxwell Gbenije, along with Dr. Bayo Fagbemi and his dedicated team, whose commitment to inclusion continues to transform lives.
